Afternoon Play: Ducky, by Roger Williams
Ivor Novello, singer, actor, composer and star, became one of the most popular British entertainers of the early 20th century. He was gay, and at the time, was notorious for some of his more glamorous affairs.
During World War II, at the height of his popularity, Novello was sentenced to eight weeks in prison (he served four) for the crime of misuse of petrol coupons, a serious offence in wartime Britain. It was an event that would affect him for the rest of his life. Would it shatter his career? Or would the love of his admirers save his career, his popularity, and his very sanity?
