Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island after Tasmania and Melville Island. It is just over 100 kilometres southwest of Adelaide. Over 9,000 years ago the island was separated from mainland Australia by a rise in sea level. It is suggested that Aboriginal people occupied the land over 11,000 years ago. The population of about 4,300 people has continuing growth of residents of 55 years and up as of 2006. The amazing island is filled with beautiful wildlife and nature with more then half of the island never been cleared of vegetation, and with a quarter of it conserved in Nation Parks & Conservation Parks. The island has five Wilderness Protection Areas to maintain its vegetation.
