The work of George Crumb is typified by MAKROKOSMOS I & II, which is a brave and innovative attempt to rethink how the piano is used by contemporary musicians. Instead of approaching the instrument in a traditional manner, Crumb sets about his task by tampering with the interior of the piano in various ingenious ways. Paper, glass cups, and all manner of weird and wonderful objects are used to aid Crumb in his quest, producing a stunning set of works which stand up as a bold and brave statement against traditional means of approaching the piano. Margaret Leng Ten performs Crumb's works at his prepared piano here, with all 24 MAKROKOSMOS pieces getting an airing.
