A Public Health Inspector is on the loose in the hotel. Basil finds Mr Carnegie with his nose literally in a tray of meat and sarcastically offers to get him the wine list too. As soon as he realises who he is, however, he changes his tune. Much to everyone's surprise, Mr Carnegie gives the meat the all clear but proceeds to read out a very long list of other faults he has found in the kitchen and elsewhere in the hotel, including two dead pigeons in the water tank. They have 24 hours to rectify matters or be closed down. Basil rushes upstairs to get Manuel's help for the clean-up operation. Manuel is sitting on his bed, playing his guitar, serenading his pet Siberian hamster. Manuel has been conned; it is a rat. To Manuel's dismay, Basil orders its immediate removal. Luckily, Polly says her friend will take it and Manuel can visit it whenever he likes. In reality, they hide it outside in the shed. But when Manuel takes Basil the rat some food, he stupidly leaves the door ajar. Later, in the bar, the Major spots Basil happily nibbling peanuts on a table. He knows how to deal with vermin, and fetches his double-barrelled shotgun. Basil catches him, and soon realises what has happened. In the kitchen and dining room, he discovers Polly, Terry and Manuel, searching for Manuel's pet. Furious to find that it has been named in his honour, Basil threatens them all with the sack, then the rat hunt begins in earnest, with Basil taking the drastic measure of giving a veal fillet a liberal sprinkling of rat poison and placing it on the floor. Mr Carnegie puts in another appearance, and is somewhat startled to hear the Major firing his shotgun in the bar, Polly in reception with a large net and Manuel crying that Basil is in ratatouille. In the confusion, a tray of veal is knocked on the floor and mixed with the one that contains rat poison. Will Basil poison the guests? Will the staff succeed in capturing the rat before Mr Carnegie sees him? Suffice it to say, it's the end for Fawlty Towers.
