Radcliff and his men set out in pursuit of Friday, who has hi-jacked a car. Given the security breach attempted by the other abductees, Reece orders that Rucker be confined. She is to see Neurosurgeon Group Captain Preston. The remaining abductee dies on the operating table as Preston attempts to remove tthe implant. Terrell is till clamming up in response to interrogation. Throughout the episode we see his story emerge in flashback. Back in 1944 the craashed ship (seen at the start of Chapter 1) contained two survivors, one of whom was shot. The remaining being was taken to a remote sanatorium, where Terrell was given leave to try and communicate with it. it appeared to be peaceful creature, but Terrell was forced back to his bomb disposal duties before he could establish communication with it. By drawing a pictograph of the alien distress symbol in afield, Terrell allowed himself to be abducted by the creature's own people, know as the echoes. Sine 1944, travelling close to light speed as one of their pilots, he has aged very little relative to humans on earth. Progress on unravelling the technology of Terrell's crashed pod is slow and the team need his help. When a flash in the sky is followed by radar picking up a unidentified craft on a crash course to land. Tucker manages to persuade Terrell to help the. He identifies the incoming craft as Echo, and not hostile. Drake manages to save the injured pilot when it plunges into a lake. After frantic attempts to resuscitate the Echo pilot, it gains consciousness for long enough to speak to Terrell. Just as its condition stabilises Terrell kills it. Distress, he explains that the Echo asked to die. The flash in the sky was the mothership. The Echoes detonated their own ships engines, committing mass suicide rather that let themselves be changed and put to violent purpose by the nDs. Terrell reveals what he knows of the nD's plan before he wouldn't speak out for fear of endangering the Echoes. When Terrell was shot down the nDs knew that he might pass the truth on to mankind, so now they have stepped up their campaign. They can't be stopped. Drake is distressed by the realisation that has precipitated the whole thing. Friday reaches the town of Oakbridge. He is undergoing alarming physical changes. The wound on Tucker's arm begins to heal as nD tissue. Wing commander Friday sets off on the mission which the nDs have planned. Tucker is confined until she can be examined by military neurosurgeon group Captain Susan Preston. Terrell begins to bond with Drake and eventually opens up enough to tell his story to the astonished team. Willingly abducted from Earth in 1944, he has been in the service of a peaceful alien race known as the echoes. Travelling close to light speed he has aged very little in fifty years. A flash in the sky is followed by a sudden, mysterious radar blip. Terrell identifies the rat as echo, on a crash course to Earth homing in on a signal from Terrell's craft. Drake sets out to rescue the pilot. It is badly injured, but manages to speak to Terrell, who reacts unexpectedly tot he terrible news brought by his friend. The true extent of the nD's capabilities becomes clear. As he reaches the town of Kirkhaven, Friday begins to undergo alarming physical changes. Back at Field Headquarters, Tucker becomes concerned about the way her wound is beginning to heal.
