Following a spate of mysterious deaths which leaves the victims completely bloodless, John Strange and Jude Atkins try to work out who or what is behind them. Unusually, Canon Black contacts Strange following the death of his sister, Mrs Fortune asking for his help. Her body was found completely drained of blood. Following a tip off from Kevin, Strange also begins to suspect that the death of Barry Sturges is connected. Sturges' body was found in a forest in Herzegovina. Sturges' body is held at Revered Capstick's church, but when Strange visits Capstick he becomes convinced that yet again Canon Black is masterminding a cover up. Mina, a young woman from Herzogovina, is also a frequent visitor to Capstick's church but always seems terrified when approached. She is befriended by Bill Morrison, a builder who is renovating an old house. Despite encouraging Strange to approach the case with a more scientific background Jude agrees with Strange in believing that it is somehow connected to a picture of a 'Dubik' or blood eater that Strange has in his house. What is it that makes the victims believe that are in the company of something familiar before they are killed and what does this mean in particular for Strange who has to come to terms with his traumatic past. Finally, what are Canon Black's real motives in involving Strange? Does it have anything to do with the discovery of an ancient stone 'Asmoth' that shares its name with the demon that Strange alleges killed his girlfriend, Helen?
