The news of the Cyprus oil find has rocked Greek Cyprus and serious civil unrest has broken out. Urquhart, posing as a patriot, is delighted. When the news breaks that the British High Commission has been seized by rebels and the High Commissioner held hostage, it gives him the perfect opportunity to launch a strong-arm offensive. A swift triumph restores Urquhart's political standing at home and leaves Makepeace floundering. Makepeace asks Claire to provide her devotion to him by getting the document from the Ministry of Defence that will prove Urquhart's involvement in the death of Evanghelos's brothers. Claire visits the Ministry of Defence, takes out Urquhart's war record and learns the truth about her boss. Meanwhile, events are spiralling out of control In Cyprus. The Greek Cypriot President Nicolaou has been abducted from the Presidential Palace, and both he and the High Commissioner are being held at a hunting lodge in the mountains. The incident ends in tragedy; some schoolgirls are killed and Urquhart's fate is sealed. With headlines screaming for his resignation, Claire abandons him, as does Geoffrey. Urquhart's war record is delivered to Evanghelos Passolides, who finally learns what really happened to his brothers. Elizabeth visits Corder to devise a plan to save her husband. She reassures him that everything will be all right in the end. But, when the end finally comes, no one is more surprised than Urquhart
