Awaiting her fiance Changez at Heathrow Airport, Jamila is dismayed by the chubby new arrival from Bombay he is hardly the romantic figure for which she was hoping. As for Changez, he seems more interested in the whereabouts of 221b Baker Street than he does in Jamila. He has a passion for the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and warm winter coats. Jainila's initial disgust is compounded when, at a welcoming reception for the new groom, he reveals his character and his crippled hand to the family. Karim is the one person who makes friends with him. Meanwhile at home, Haroon and Eva have news for Karim: "I've decided I want to be with Eva," his father announces. As he speaks, his wife Margaret is leaving home anyway with their younger son. Karim is torn between two options, and two contrasting ways of life. He finally opts for a future with Eva, who has her own ambitions to move them all to London from suburbia. Changez and Jamila settle into a platonic marriage, with the new husband finding regular sexual relief through Shinko (Noriko Aida), a Japanese prostitute. However, when he finds Jamila in bed with Karim, the men's friendship is at an end.
