Karim Amir the 17-year-old son of an upper-class Indian civil servant and an English mother is fascinated by 1970s London. Bored at school, he is keen to get involved in any kind of movement, action and sexual activity he can find. One evening, his life is changed forever when his respectable father Haroon takes his son to an evening of meditation at the home of the free-thinking Eva. There he watches his father make love to Eva, then himself has sex with her beautiful son, Charlie. Haroon's career as a guru to the suburban middle-classes blossoms, but life in the Amir household becomes increasingly tense, as Karim's mother Margaret suspects that Eva's interest in her husband transcends Eastern philosophy. In another part of the suburbs, Karim's best friend Jamila is distraught. Her father Anwar is forcing her into an arranged marriage with a 30-year-old man from Bombay, and threatening to starve himself to death in the Paradise Stores, the family's corner shop, if she will not submit to his wishes.
