Ann S. Chile 1974
As of 1971 I was working in Chile for ECLA(C). On 11 September 1973 there was a military coup and Pinochet took power.
At the end of 1973 I was on a mission to Peru, Bolvia and Ecuador. While in Peru I met Ann who had been on her way to Chile to do research. But did not really know what to do.
The military had stormed my house one night with an order of arrest. Since I was not there they accused of me of illegal possion of a pistol and torn up my permit. The UN was considered as leftish by Pinochet and was consequently harassed. UN students had been killed.
The UN was weak in its dealings with Pinochet.
Since I had a copy of the permit at my office the junta's allegations did not hold and the UN secretary general, then Kurt Waldheim, made a strong protest to the junta.
Ann had taravlled before me to Santiago and helped me in the negotiations with the UN and I was eventually allowed to retun to my home in Santiago.
This video clip is basically from my garden with Ann. When I left Chile a few months later Ann had joined the revolutionary left and went underground. My friend, and Ann's companion, El Gordo was killed in an ambust set up by the military. That Ann escaped was a miracle.
