Battle of Cambrai (1917). Commander: British General Sir Julian Byng (476 tanks, 19 divisions, cavalry). Opponent: German General Georg von der Marwitz (4 divisions, major trench defenses). Location: Cambrai, Northern France. At Stake: Breaking German stranglehold on Western Front. The German's Hindenburg Line, fortified by deep trenches and barbed wire, is considered unbreakable. But General Byng comes up with a strategy to storm the barricade with a barrage of tanks. It's risky - tanks are new technology, and so far, have a poor performance record on the field. Still, General Byng goes through with his plan. The tanks roll through the barricades, filling the trenches with planks so infantry can rush through.
