Tet Offensive, Vietnam War (1968). Commander: United States General William Westmoreland (60,000 troops). Opponent: North Vietnam General Vo Nguyen Giap (84,000 troops). Location: South Vietnam. At Stake: Communist invasion of South Vietnam threatens the country and U.S. troops. Stationed in South Vietnam, General Westmoreland sees signs of a major attack from Communist factions in the North. His concern is soon justified - the Communists launch a massive attack against major cities and military bases. General Westmoreland makes a difficult decision. Instead of bombing the cities, U.S. troops move from "house to house, street to street," fighting the enemy up close. The Communists are defeated, but the battle forever alters U.S. public opinion that the Vietnam War can be easily won.
