Six Day War (1967). Commander: Israeli Minister of Defense Moshe Dayan (150,000 troops). Opponent: Egyptian President Gamel Abdel Nasser (Arab force of 465,000 troops). Location: Israel's borders. At Stake: Survival of Israel. Egyptian President Nasser, frustrated with Israel's decade-earlier victory at the Suez Canal, decides to fight back. Nassar's Arab forces gather on three sides of the tiny country, but Israeli leader Dayan attacks first. His surprise raid decimates Egypt's air force. Daring tank raids smash through Egyptian positions and drives a panicked Egypt back to the Suez. Fierce fighting pushes the remainder of the Arab forces back across Israel's borders. In the end, Israel's crushing defeat of combined Arab forces forever changes the Middle East power structure.
