Jim Denevan will find a piece of driftwood on a beach and with it carve out gigantic images of flawless spirals, each hundreds of feet across. After six hours of labor, the drawing is finished but within ten to fifteen minutes after the completion, it will be reclaimed by the rising tide, leaving no trace of its human past. With their huge scale and gossamer life span, the drawings may seem irrational, or perhaps insignificant or even impractical, especially in this age of skyscrapers that outlast their builders. Sandman will capture the mysterious beauty of these sand drawings, and will also show how that beauty is intertwined with Jim's own loss and the defiant optimism that he brings into his work.
