Featroller review, Windbag Edition:

Is Little Feat a cult band? No, I'm not implying they're Scientologists. Are we the featfans a
"cult following"?

And if so, who cares? But this particular show certainly has a cult following. It's true that the only known
member is me, but never mind, I know a cult when I see one in the mirror. And most of it has to do with
Disc 2. It has nine tracks. The first four, featuring Larry Campbell on a blazing fiddle, could be described as
funky turbo-bluegrass. Next is the gorgeous ballad Voices on the Wind, dedicated to the NYPD and NYFD (9/11
was all too fresh at the time). And then... The Fan! It's as if Alison Krauss & Union Station got cranked up
on meth and wielded Stratocasters to channel Frank Zappa. Then, with feedback still ringing in your ears,
back comes the fiddler for the country AND western Willin'. At this point Don't Bogart makes perfect sense,
but it's only a prelude to the piece de resistance: This Land Is Your Land. The featerized version of the
Woody Guthrie classic is a genre of its own, folkfunk. And especially after 9/11, especially in New York, it
does what music does best. Forget about campaigning to get the Feat into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Lame. Let's
start a movement to get the Star-Spangled Banner replaced by This Land feat-style as the national anthem!

And oh yeah, the rest of the show rocks too. Gotta love the matrix sound. BB Kings would be a great venue
except that most of the crowd gets crocked and blabbers away, thereby paying through the nose for music
they're not hearing. It's mighty frustrating if you want to actually listen. The matrix mix gives the feeling
of being there, minus 90% of the loudmouth ambience. So, if you don't have this show, download and burn
immediately. And when you run into folks unfamiliar with the Feat, particularly if they lean in the country-
bluegrass direction, make them a copy of Disc 2... and watch their face as the S#*t hits The Fan.
