Of all the music I enjoyed in Burlington in the mid-'90s, James Harvey's music might have been my favorite, and the short-lived Rio's Cantina, located in the Champlain Mill building on the banks of the Winooski River, was one of the area's best listening rooms. So you can imagine I have very fond memories of James' run of almost-weekly gigs there during the winter > spring > summer of '97. It was really his first chance to organize and lead a band since his return to Burlington from California towards the end of '95, and it was a sheer pleasure to hear the music develop week by week. I taped maybe a dozen of these gigs, but this one is the gold standard as far as I'm concerned. Belated thanks, Ed, for booking these gigs (I know you're out there, buddy!)

Dig this music, and if you should ever stumble upon a copy of James' one and only solo CD "Grateful", be sure to buy it! You can also hear James on the two CDs by Peter Apfelbaum's Heiroglyphics Ensemble, on Don Cherry's 1991 "MultiKulti" on A&M, and of course on "Surrender to the Air".

Cheers!
