Readers who enjoy Bill Bryson's work, or are fans of drug memoirs such as Mr Nice by Howard Marks, The Damage Done by Warren Fellows and/or drug fiction such as The Beach by Alex Garland and Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh, will especially appreciate Eating Smoke.

Eating Smoke is Chris Thrall's "true-crime" memoir of a year living on the edge in Hong Kong. It takes place in 1995/6, just before the Anglo-Sino handover.

The book charts Chris's leaving the Royal Marine Commandos in the UK, having served in the Northern Ireland Conflict, to move to Hong Kong to run his own business, The MaxTech Group, a successful consumer-electronics network-marketing distributorship, the first one ever in Mainland China.

Upon arrival in Hong Kong, Chris finds out that The MaxTech Group's product supplier, Quorum International, has run into difficulties, leaving him penniless with no option but to walk away from two years of hard work (he built his company part-time while serving in the Forces) to try to survive in Hong Kong - 'The Fragrant Harbour.'

Following a series of bizarre jobs - employed as an international marketing director for a computer memory chip trading company, where he was only required to show his 'white' face to overseas clients; selling advertising space to corporations such as British Telecom HK Ltd in a business directory that didn't actually exist; and 'blagging' his way to become DJ of the biggest nightclub in Southern China with China's boxing champion as his bodyguard - Chris finds himself in psychosis from crystal methamphetamine addiction and working for the 14K, Hong Kong's notorious triad brotherhood, as a doorman in Club Nemo in the Wanchai red-light district.

It's at this point where the book takes an intriguing turn as Chris uncovers 'The Foreign Triad' - a secret clique of expats who work hand-in-hand with Chinese organised crime - while giving a firsthand insight into his descent into mental illness from amphetamine abuse. Exhausted, hallucinating and dealing with a 'Voice' in his head, he is utterly convinced...

"...that everything in Wanchai, indeed even Hong Kong, had a secret set of pulleys, cables and motors linking it all up like an enormous pinball machine or a city-sized version of the ghost house at the fair..."

To give away anymore of this intriguing plot would do a disservice to the reader. Chris' combination of endearing honesty and page-turning prose will have you riveted to your seat, laughing out loud at his hilarious observations of the Chinese or fighting emotions as his fractured upbringing slowly comes back to haunt him . . . along with the 'spirits' that lurk in Wanchai's dark and filthy back streets.

Praise for Eating Smoke

"What else would you expect from a former Royal Marine Commando with a penchant for prose? From sharing with us his true-life experiences as a drug abuser to bravely exposing the triads of Hong Kong's criminal underworld, Chris Thrall is a literary bad-ass." - Tom Carter, author of CHINA: Portrait of a People
